Color Styling the Gallery Wall

You’ll remember from this post that I hung a gallery wall along our staircase.

Unable to leave well enough alone, I’ve been tinkering and adjusting for the past year to create a little more impact with the colors in this gallery. I wanted the dominant colors to be white and yellow, which would pop against the gray wall. (For a reason I’ve yet to understand I am obsessed with white objects against colored backgrounds. It’s a thing.)

So to lighten up the dark frames of this gallery I spray painted most of them white. Then I rehung nearly every frame to a new spot so that the color AND the shapes would both flow up the wall more naturally. And now the wall looks like this.

Yeah, like that.

You’ll see I added the Spoonflower to this wall, two pieces of my son’s artwork, some framed fabric, and then a bunch of yellow pictures that interest me. My source for all these pictures was my archive of magazine back issues. We’re talking gobs here. I selected pictures that I liked and that inspired something in me. The plumeria recalls our trips to Hawaii, the sunflower brings to mind my sunflower stage from college, the vintage bottles remind me of my grandma’s milk bottles. So it’s more than just pages from a magazine, and more than a cheap option for decorating (though I super like that part). It’s saying something to me.

I have to thank my in-laws for indulging my love of oval frames and mirrors when they’re out yard-saling and thrift browsing. :-) Upcycling my friends! The ovals give this whole wall an organic flow that my squared frames weren’t pulling off. (And the slightly crooked hanging ones help that too.)
