Black & White Kitchen Redo

When we moved into our house, the kitchen looked like this.

Clean, bright and well-staged, yes. But it lacked vibe and I believe in kitchens that make you FEEL something. After all it’s the central gathering place for most families and I wanted some character in it — some warmth, welcome and a touch of farmhouse aesthetic.

We didn’t chronicle every step of the process because our kitchen redo predated this blog, so I’m just going to show before/after shots and tell you what we did to bring in that warmth and character.

Here is our kitchen today.

From another angle, here’s a before shot.

And after.

Here’s what we did:

1. Bought a refrigerator. Naturally. Because it’s kind of important for this room to have one. We went for the counter-depth fridge so it wouldn’t protrude into the walking space of the kitchen and I’m oh, so glad we did this.

2. Put in black granite countertops. (We hired a friend’s company and they did an excellent job!)

3. More than doubled the size of the island to accommodate seating for four, and moved the chandelier to be centered over the island. Hubsy drew up the plans, found the new table legs online and hired a carpenter to build the extended table frame and attach it to the legs. We LIVE on this island.

4. Changed the hardware on the cabinets from knobs to handles.

5. Installed a beadboard backsplash. Hubsy did all the work on this and it remains my favorite feature of this kitchen. It pulls in the farmhouse feeling I’d been wanting.

6. Put in a new sink and faucet hardware.

Here’s another before/after:

And now, here are waaaay too many after shots, but hopefully something will inspire you!

Board-and-Batten Boy’s Room Makeover

We lived in this house a year before tackling Little Guy’s room. Now that he’s almost 3, it’s time for a bigger bed and we decided to take on the whole project while we were upgrading the bed. Here’s how the room’s looked since we moved in.

My inspiration came from Thrifty Decor Chick’s Big Boy Room:

I could not get this navy-and-white combination out of my head. I thought about it for a few weeks and then went for it.

First up was painting the bottom of the room white, and then creating the faux board and batten. (Many MANY thanks to the sweet Hubs who measured and sawed all the lattice boards to the correct length and made sure none of the slats ran into the outlets.)

I’m not going to give a “how to” on the board-and-batten since you can follow Thrifty Decor Chick’s tutorial like I did. (Even down to the wall color–Admiralty from Lowe’s.)

Here we go!

The gallery wall is one of my favorite features of the room. These are $4.95 frames from WalMart that I matted with $4 mats from A.C. Moore. The prints are 9″x12″ from Nations Photo Lab which does great quality oversized prints for cheap-o ($3 apiece in this case AND they sent me two extra sets of the photos at no extra charge). I love that we can swap out these photos for kid artwork or different pictures or whatever we want when we need a change of scenery.

The Circo dinosaur sheets (Target, $30 I think?) give some added color accent to the room’s navy and apple green palette. The bolster pillow is from HomeGoods ($12).

The bedside table was a $5 light pine yardsale find that we spray painted a dark espresso.

The white desk you may recall from my Desk Do Over post. I will spray paint the chair an apple green in an upcoming post to complete the look of the room. I may update the knobs too.

The reading nook isn’t quite complete. I’ll be painting these three frames white and spraying the mats an apple green to make them pop off the wall.

Now I have to remember that this is the room of a 2-year-old. So I kept the beloved alphabet, but tucked it away…

And I’ve already thought about how this room can “grow up” if ever we want to give it an adult look. It could be something like this…

(I need source for this photo. Anyone? I found it at sadi+sallie, but I’m not sure the original source.)

So here’s the final Before-N-After….

I like the board-and-batten so much that I already foresee the next project!
