Custom Initial Art

I love handmade gifts. — Giving them. Getting them. Making them.

So I was thrilled that my sweet friend Shelley had already chosen her soon-coming baby’s name “Amelia.” It opened the possibilities for a monogrammed gift.

Using her nursery colors as my guide, I bought ribbon, two sheets of decorative paper, a letter “A,” and a 12×12 paint canvas.

I attached the ribbon and “A” with hot glue, and I attached the papers with adhesive dots that are 1/8″ thick to give some layered dimension to the piece.

You could make this SO easily in any color just by changing out the ribbon and paper.

Best of all, the supplies for this gift came in just under $10 yet it is completely custom, personalized and an original piece of artwork.

I will be making more of these in the near future!

Removable Drapes for a Windowed Door

A few months ago we gave our bonus room a makeover to create a more comfortable family hang-out space.

Since then, we’ve replaced the original interior door with a windowed door to open the room, let in more light, and make it feel bigger.

BUT we needed a way to create privacy for the room since it also doubles as a guest room when we use the pull-out couch bed. With only days to go before our second child arrived I was exhausted and out of ideas, but the good Hubs landed on something perfect.

THESE babies for $1.48!

He placed two of them over the top of the door, put a short curtain rod between them, bent the curve to keep the rod from sliding, and voila…

You’ll remember that the curtains on the other side of the room have grommets at the top. (You can see the DIY custom drapes tutorial here.)

Well I had an extra curtain that I wasn’t using so I flipped it upside down and hung it on the door.

Now the grommets on the bottom act as weights to keep the panel in place. (And they bring in a funky element too.)

Here’s the view from outside the room.

Of course now I’m thinking about a few other windowed doors in our house. See what you started Hubsy?? xoxo

Fun and Easy Spring Decor

May I be the first to wish you Happy Spring!

I know the calendar hasn’t officially rung Spring, but since we’ve had the warmest winter in the history of weather and I’ve been looking at budding trees and flowers for WEEKS now, it is time. (One of the true perks of living in NC!)

My dining room wall has a huge empty frame that you may remember from my Christmas Ornament Wall Art post. Starting with that frame, I added the pink wreaths from my Valentine’s Mantel to turn it into something Spring-y.

At Target I found S-p-r-i-n-g letter blocks for $2.50. So putting it all together, here’s my little touch of Spring whimsy.

At the center of the dining room table are my favorite faux blooms from Pier 1 about three years ago (but they still sell them).

I like the vibrance of the pinks in contrast with the gray walls.

How’s that for a $2.50 cheap-o project? Here’s to Spring y’all…

Recycling Gift Tags Into Artwork

My boss gave me this cute diaper cake at our office baby shower.

There are little jungle animal sticker tags on the ribbon around this “cake” which inspired some artwork possibilities.

Remember these empty frames in the nursery?

Well I took those cute jungle animal tags, added some ribbon….

And what’s better than fre-cycled?
